Approval of Developer Events for the Import of Genetically Modified (GM) Soybean Grain as Food, Feed and Processing (FFP)
In pursuance of the decisions of the 37th National Biosafety Committee (NBC) Meeting held on 13th May 2026, the developer licenses for the following genetically modified (GM) events have been approved. Importers are advised to submit their applications for import permits through the BCH Portal against the approved GM events in compliance with the approved SOPs and other applicable regulatory requirements. Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB)
The Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), established in 1986 at the University of Punjab, Lahore, focuses on teaching, training, and research in molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology. It addresses challenges in agriculture, health, industry, energy, and the environment while fostering innovation and collaboration through seminars and conferences.
Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI)
The Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), established in 1962, is a leading research organization driving growth in key crops across Punjab, Pakistan. With its main campus in Faisalabad and a network of research centers, labs, and farms across the province, AARI focuses on developing new crop varieties, advanced technologies, and sustainable practices to ensure food security, enhance export potential, and conserve natural resources. The Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad, houses a state-of-the-art GMO Testing Laboratory. This facility plays a vital role in monitoring unauthorized GM crops and events in Pakistan. By isolating genomic DNA from samples like seeds and leaves and detecting GM elements through PCR with gene-specific primers, the lab ensures stringent biosafety measures. It also oversees import/export activities of agricultural products, maintaining compliance with national and international standards to support sustainable agriculture.
National Institute for Genomics & Advanced Biotechnology (NIGAB)
Established in 2007, NIGAB is a national reference lab for biotechnology diagnostics, supporting food security and sustainable development. It conducts cutting-edge agricultural research in plants, animals, and microbes through 28 advanced labs, glasshouses, and containment facilities. It develops GMOs, improved crop varieties, and livestock vaccines, utilizing genome editing, NGS, and marker-assisted selection. Key achievements include virus-free banana cultivation, 30 novel plant genes, and probiotic feed additives for enhanced dairy productivity.
National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE)
The National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), established in 1994 under PAEC, is a leading biotechnology institute and an affiliate center of ICGEB. It focuses on advancing agriculture, health, environment, and industry through modern biotechnology and genetic engineering, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and national and international grants. NIBGE offers research services, marketable products, and educational programs, including MPhil and PhD degrees, contributing to Pakistan’s socio-economic growth and human resource development in modern sciences.
