Announcements Approval of Developer Events for the Import of Genetically Modified (GM) Soybean Grain as Food, Feed and Processing (FFP): In pursuance of the decisions of the 37th National Biosafety Committee (NBC) Meeting held on 13th May 2026, the developer licenses for the following genetically modified (GM) events have been approved.  Importers are advised to submit their applications for import permits through the BCH Portal against the approved GM events in compliance with the approved SOPs and other applicable regulatory requirements. The following GM events have been approved by the National Biosafety Committee: BASF ACS-GM005-3 ACS-GM006-4 Corteva DAS-44406-6 DP-305423-1 DAS-81419-2 Bayer MON-87701-2 MON-89788-1 MON-87751-7 MON-87708-9 MON-87705-6 MON-04032-6 Syngenta MST-G072-2         The Fourth Edition of The Genome Newsletter Is Now Live: Discover Pakistan’s progress in biosafety, GM crop regulation, and digital governance. 🔗 Click here to read     Clean Klean Cotton Varieties (CKC-01, CKC-03, CKC-05 and CKC-06) approved for commercial release in Pakistan: Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) approved cotton varieties CKC-01, CKC-03 of Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), University of the Punjab, Lahore for commercial release in the country in 22nd meeting of National Biosafety Committee (NBC) held on 4th November 2020, and whereas CKC-05 and CKC-06 were approved in 27th meeting of NBC held on 22nd April 2024. The said varieties have the potential to tolerate cotton bollworms, especially pink bollworms that have played a drastic role in our cotton production recently. CKC varieties harbor CKC technology with two insecticidal genes (cry1Ac+cry2A) and one herbicidal gene (GTG). Thus, varieties help the farmers to control bollworms by reducing the number of insecticidal sprays. The number of sprays on cotton crops to control sucking and chewing insect pests goes beyond tens that increase cost of production per acre. Besides that, farmers control weeds by manual hoeing or tractors in cotton crops. Both methods increase the cost of cotton production per acre. CKC technology has helped the farmers to reduce the number of sprays used for control of insect pests and weeds. This has ultimately led to an increase in farm productivity saving billions of Pakistani rupees each year. CEMB Cotton has immense potential for the economy of Pakistan as it earns the largest export revenues and in addition to the lint, the seed of cotton for oil and meal accounts for 80 percent of the national production of oilseeds.     Enhancing Regional BCH Nodes: Online Training for Effective Biosafety Information Shari: An online training session organized by the Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH) on strengthening regional BCH nodes for more effective biosafety information sharing will be held on April 24, 2025.     The Third IBC Training on Pak-BCH Online Portal: We are pleased to announce the 3rd Training for Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs) on the Pak-Biosafety Clearing-House (Pak-BCH) Online Portal was successfully conducted on 22nd April 2025, Islamabad. Biosafety Clearing House

Pakistan Biosafety Clearing House for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) Regulations

In accordance with Article 20 of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH) has been established to serve as an essential information exchange platform. The BCH aids parties in implementing the Protocol's provisions and facilitates the sharing of information and experiences related to Genetically/Living Modified Organisms (GMOs/LMOs)

  • Central Information Hub: The BCH acts as a “one-stop shop” for accessing and contributing biosafety-related information, helping governments make informed decisions regarding the importation or release of GMOs.
  • Facilitation of Scientific and Technical Cooperation: The BCH enhances scientific and technical cooperation by providing access to information on biosafety capacity-building activities. This promotes coordination and synergy among various initiatives
  • Support for Industry and Stakeholders: The BCH offers easy access to critical information for industry and other stakeholders. This includes details of national contacts, relevant laws and regulations governing GMO activities, and decisions and declarations made by parties, particularly concerning transboundary movements.

By using the BCH, government, industry, and stakeholders can effectively collaborate and share vital information, ensuring safe and informed practices in the handling of GMOs.
